Winter is here, school holidays are coming, and it’s time to make a most of winter activities before the snow melts away. Here, we’ll look at the top 4 ski fields that are perfect for all levels and all within 1hr 30min driving time from Christchurch.

Mt Hutt : 1hr 30min

  • Adult day pass: $99
  • Adult day pass + rental: $147
  • Children 10 and under free

Mt Hutt ski field is one of the most popular destinations for skiers and snowboarders hitting the slopes each winter, winning New Zealand’s Best Ski Resort award in 2015 and 2016. Mt Hutt offers a range of different priced packages that meet everybody’s budget, including private or group lessons if you want to improve your ability on the slopes. Getting here is easy with the option to drive yourself or with a group of friends, or arrange Mt Hutt ski bus transport from either Christchurch or Methven. Porters: 1hr 15min

  • Adult day pass: $99
  • Adult rental: $49
  • Children 12 and under free

Porters ski area is the closest ski field from Christchurch and is a popular choice for beginners wanting to gain confidence on the mountain. Porters offers complimentary skiing for children under 12 when accompanied by a paying guardian. Like Mt Hutt, Porters provides private or group lessons through their Snow Sports  School. Getting to Porters is easy driving, however if the conditions require chains, there is the alternative option to take the free mountain shuttle that rides from the chain fitting area up to the mountain. Mt Cheeseman: 1hr 30min

Cheeseman is a laid back, family friendly skiing destination that promotes a fun, safe environment in a beautiful alpine setting, and is expected to open for the season on July 8. Cheeseman provides beginner group lessons or private lessons for both visitors and members who want to gain some more skills on the slopes, with the ski field aimed towards learners and people of intermediate ability. Alpine Expeditions is a transport service at $69 per person return that takes the hassle out of driving. Broken River: 1hr 30min

  • Children 11 and under free

Broken River ski field is known for its powder skiing in fresh snow 3- 4 days after the last snow fall, as well as it’s unique sheltered terrain that keeps the bad weather at bay. Broken River also offers night skiing which is an awesome experience if you’ve decided to visit for a few days. Broken River offers special packages for those looking to spend more than just one day up on the mountain. Three lodges are nestled in native beech forest at tree-line just 10-15 minutes walk from the first ski area. Just like the other ski fields, Broken River provides a Ski School programme for those looking to find their confidence on the snow.
